Malaysia’s warmth and generosity is incredible. The support we’ve received for the first episode of Slowmad in KL has been amazing.
Since someone asked about my gear, I wanted to share why I chose to film only with an iPhone instead of one of those fancy, state-of-the-art cameras. As a former actress, stage director, and author, I believe that creativity doesn’t require loads of expensive, high-end equipment (though I agree that an iPhone is an investment in itself, but it’s a multitool, making it handy for many things beyond filming). In fact, I think having too much gear can sometimes distance you from your inventiveness and creativity, as well as from doing something more natural and poetic. Too much technology can strip the truth from your story.
Great photographers and filmmakers have created timeless art with nothing more than a simple camera that only shot in black and white. Charlie Chaplin is still celebrated on global screens, even though his tools were basic by today’s standards. They were all telling great stories in their own unique way. We all love a good story, with or without words, with movement or stillness, and if you pay attention, you’ll see that life is full of stories waiting to be told or heard. For me, I wanted something easy to carry and use. I’m not particularly interested in getting bogged down by the technical aspects of shooting and editing. Instead, I prefer to spend that time observing life and trusting my instincts—something modern life tends to tame a bit too much.
So here I am, with my phone, my eye, and my imagination. I don’t need to make things more beautiful—they already are in their imperfection. Life is a beautiful gift. And the support I’ve received means the world to me. Having good-hearted people by your side when you create inspires you to be better and helps you push through the inevitable obstacles of creation: doubts, disappointments, exhaustion.
