  • As a family, we love celebrating Halloween, having lived in places where it’s a cherished tradition. But this year, we’re in a place where October 31st marks Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Wherever we are, we try to embrace the local customs, and we find beautiful parallels between Halloween and Diwali—the warmth of lights and the joy of gathering together.Diwali, celebrated over four to five days, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It’s a time to honor Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, enjoy sweets, create vibrant rangoli, and welcome prosperity into our homes. Our youngest was a little sad about missing Halloween this year, so his older brother cheered him up by creating imaginative drawings that transformed his siblings—and himself—into fantastical beings. Which character is your favorite? Pick a number and let us know!Whether it’s Halloween, Diwali, Día de los Muertos, or any celebration that honors life, family, and the triumph of light over darkness, it’s a beautiful reminder of what truly unites us.
  • Discovering a country means truly immersing yourself in its culture. This Sunday, we explored George Town to film our first episode of Let’s Go: An Educational Adventure. On Armenian Street, we stumbled upon the @houseofstreetart.penang —a charming store where you can pick up local souvenirs and get to know Malaysian artists like Mohd Azmi Mohd Hussin, affectionately known as ME. A proud Penangite, he was born and raised in Butterworth. Our own little artist truly enjoyed both @azmi_hussin books we picked up! The Little Mamak is a heartwarming tale from ME’s childhood as part of the Mamak community (Malaysian people of Indian origin, mostly practicing Islam). Tanjong Life follows the cheeky adventures of Joe G as he discovers 50 of Penang’s must-see attractions—a fresh, fun take that’s even better than a traditional tourist guide. If you’re visiting Penang, I highly recommend checking out The House of Street Art (near the “children on the bicycle” mural). The owner is warm and welcoming and has so many stories to share. We learned so much! Plus, by purchasing these incredible books, you’ll be supporting a local artist and diving deeper into Malaysian culture. Terima Kasih.
