As a family, we love celebrating Halloween, having lived in places where it’s a cherished tradition. But this year, we’re in a place where October 31st marks Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Wherever we are, we try to embrace the local customs, and we find beautiful parallels between Halloween and Diwali—the warmth of lights and the joy of gathering together.Diwali, celebrated over four to five days, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It’s a time to honor Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, enjoy sweets, create vibrant rangoli, and welcome prosperity into our homes. Our youngest was a little sad about missing Halloween this year, so his older brother cheered him up by creating imaginative drawings that transformed his siblings—and himself—into fantastical beings.
